This material explores the sophisticated and contradicting inter-relations between two indicators of Ukrainian society: the level of productive employment and life quality. The main causes for the decline in living standards in Ukraine are identified as family and hidden unemployment, the growth of shadow sector, decline in wages as cost of labour, and inadequate professional and qualification structure of the labour force. Particular solutions in the field are offered.
